Courtney Smyth 11/5/09

I wasn't able to get downtown for first Thursday (or Friday for that matter). It's playoff time in the Smyth house, lots of practices.
So, I just surfed around a bit and found Andreas Gursky. I was first drawn to his work because it is the style I most enjoy. He is a German artist born in 1955. He did some of his training with Hilla and Bernd Becher. That seems to show in many of his pieces. His work is mostly landscape and architecture, printed in very large scale. Since 1990 he uses the computer to digitally enhance his photos, and admits this openly. He thinks it helps makes them seem larger than the actual subjects. Some of his images are of simple subject matter, such as the seashore landscape posted here. The linear nature and the colors are mesmerizing.
All of the images I saw are very geometric and repetitive. They have the feel of a pattern from a distance, but are very detailed upon closer inspection. Many of them seem to be making a commentary on commercialism and human consumption. His photos capture all of the tiniest details and then seem to become abstract, almost losing the details.
