Jessica Hawkins reviews Michael Schmidt

Michael Schmidt was a German photographer who just recently died after winning the Prix Pictet award for his epic series exploring global food production. He used a simple 35 mm camera and a few rolls of film to capture his images. He usually always shot in black and white to capture the essence of what he was looking at and the images at first look simple without the usual heavy editing done post production we are used to in images these days, but they have a certain air of mystery about them that are alluding. In his photographs it is said that he does not accuse, just reveals, and the interpretation is left to the viewer.
