Anna Brown reviews Massimo Vitali

Massimo Vitali is an Italian photographer who is most well-known for his large-scale color images of beach scenes and mass leisure events. His imagery is typically shot from a distance, and his panoramic views depict individuals interacting within their environments and with one another. Vitali says, “My photography comes from absolute matter-of-fact situations but also from a deep curiosity that I possess for people, for what they do and how they think.”

Although he was born in Italy, he went to study photography in London at the London College of Printing during the 1960s. Vitali began working as a photojournalist in the 1970s, which likely influenced his position as the spectator and the sense of voyeurism that his body of work evokes.

I enjoy Massimo Vitali’s beach scenes for their poetic sensibility, the rhythm of his compositions, and his soft, muted color palettes.
