Ryan Kirby submits Tony Ray-Jones
Tony Ray-Jones had a short life, living from only 1941-1972 but during that time he produced some very uncanny photos. His photos are portraying very serious people in strange and irreverent situations. Many of his photos show people doing everyday tasks like eating dinner, drinking tea, and smoking (for some people). Around them while they do this is a situation that begs the question of: how did they get there in the first place? Born in London, Jones attended school there, and then in the U.S. at Yale. He taught at the San Francisco Art Institute so that he could stay in the U.S., but was diagnosed with leukemia and died only a few days after the diagnosis. If I wanted to do that for my photos it would take a few twenty's and a note of my sanity to make them do that. Perhaps it was his non conformist personality that affected the people around him, making them more open to his ideas.
