Alright I've saved the best for last, anyone who knows me knows I adore John Waters. Waters is a prolific film director, author, photographer and sometimes actor. His
forty year
career span deals with subcultures, race, class, glamour, celebrity, and the allure of being bad. Water's first photographs were taken from off television screens, which is still seen in his work, which he manipulates and presents in multiple images. The work above is entitled,
Children who Smoke (2009) and was shown at his show,
Rear Projection at the
Gagosian Gallery in 2009. Water's sense of humor has a strong presence in his photography, which I always found attractive in every aspect of his work. He takes familiar icons of film and turns them upside down. Waters has said of contemporary art, "If you can't see it in a different way, it hates you. You have to stop, and not have
contempt before investigation."
