Jackie Nelson Submits Herman Leonard
Herman Leonard is known as "one of the finest jazz photographers to date." I was attracted to his black and white portraiture in scenes that have low lighting. It appears that he has mastered back lighting situations which allowed him to photograph some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Leonard received his BFA in photography from Ohio University, and after studying under Yousuf Karsh for a year, his career in photographing jazz really took off. He has successfully captured this scene and he has produced some wonderful black and white photographs. What also makes them interesting for me are the angles in which he chose to take them from. I like how he stayed true to the subject that he loved and contiues to take photos of jazz musicians today.
