Alan Serna contra:Gilberto Aceves Navarro

Throughout these blog posts I've venerate a great majority of the artists for their ability to use the figure to construct powerful, whimsical, and emotional narratives. But these artists in all their grandeur and excellent craftsmanship are doing little presenting the public with something new. Sure each story is unique, but what new elements are we as artists bringing into the realm of storytelling. Have we become too comfortable in this tradition?

Gilberto Aceves Navarro is wildly energetic painter whose work reflects an unquestionable confidence. Very much a forward thinker encourages his students not to be afraid to break the structure that the art world has created. In an environment where we are expected to be creative and innovative, we tend to fall into constructed categories for fear of trying to be different, and failing. Thats where we stumble, in fearing what can ultimately be our greatest success.

While creating bodies work that are unified and have a common theme behind them is important for conceptual development, we should not be dissuaded from experimenting constantly. It is through trial and error that we find out what works and what doesn't.
