Alexis Diggs Reviews John Edmonds

John Edmonds is an African American photographer who was born in Washington, D.C. Having been born in 1989, his work reflects his experience as a young black man living in America. In his series "Hoods", his subtly complex compositions address the reality of racial bias. His use of  faceless portraits require the viewer to question the culture of identification that accompanies clothing and how it is worn. This series followed the 2012 death of  young Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager deemed "suspicious looking" because he wore a hoodie.

Edmonds creates work that he hopes will make a social change and create a social awareness of the black experience. Edmonds explains that for him, the personal is political which is perhaps why I felt a personal connection to his work as mine reflects the same.
