Bill Armstrong
created a technique that visualizes and controls blur in order to create
abstract images instead of “straight” photography. For his Infinity series he takes existing photographs, manipulates them and
constructs collages that he photographs on film with the camera focus set to
infinity. The compositions are all figurative, you can see an outline of a
person but whom it truly is remains a mystery. With the extreme defocus creates
lush fields of color, eliminating intricate detail but offers different levels
of visual information. You know how you’re knocked out in a fight and you
regain consciousness, Armstrong presents us with our vison coming back with
gritty color outlines and confusion on what we are waking up to.
