Irene Lozano submits Oliver Herring
Oliver Herring is a artist who lives and works in New York. Herring's early works consist of woven sculptures and performance art which he knitted into human figures, clothing, and furniture. He is also a video artist, his stop motion videos consist of creating on art on location with strangers on the street. I am most interested in Oliver Herring's photography work. He has a series of large scaled photographs where he documented strangers after hours of colored dye had been splattered on their face. These portraits turned a simple idea/concept ,into amazing abstract portraits. Oliver is also known for his photo sculptures. I was fortunate to check out his work at Blue Star a couple of years ago. The life size photo sculptures are extremely tedious and composed of photographs Herring took. He photographed a number of models from every angle possible, then created a life size sculpture of them by cutting and pasting the photographs on to the sculptural form of his subject .
He is also featured in the ART 21 series, so be sure to check it out if you are interested in his work. They also have the ART 21 DVD available to check out at the school library. They are full of great artist/ photographers.
