Hannah Wilke is a photographer who established herself as both the artist and subject of her works. Wilke is a feminist conceptual artist who made sculptures, drawings, installation work, photography, and performance art. She often would turn her performance art into photo stills, such as the work titled "Hannah Wilke Super-t-Art". She used 20 images from a live performance in New York in 1974. Wilke is a photographer that I love to study; her work is original and controversial. She hides nothing from the viewer. Hannah Wilke died from lymphoma, which is a cancer that begins in the immune system. Wilke began to document the cancer in a variety of self portraits in 1992. The work is titled “Intra – Venus”. The large scaled self portraits in “Intra – Venus “were taken by Hannah Wilke’s husband. She planned every photo to document the disease and the transformation it had on her body. It is sad to see the documentation of her death, but at the same time the viewer is able to respect the honesty and courage behind these prints. This series contains 12 photographs taken over the two year battle with the disease. They were dated regularly and positioned in diptychs that contrast emotional and physical states. Hannah Wilke has a variety of work that is worth looking up; I will put a link below to a website that shows her work.
