BELINDA FUENTES REVIEWS EIJA LIISA AHTILA

Eija Liisa Ahtila is an artist from Finland mainly working with photography and video.

Eija Liisa Ahtila’s House is an abstract visual representation of a mental disorder called psychosis. The House is one of five episodes from the film Love is a Treasure. Prior to the video installations, Ahtila interviewed women who had this disorder. Based on the conversations, she created a whole new story with pieces from each woman. This particular episode included three scenes yet the character is emotionless to keep from over dramatizing the scene. The story encompasses a protagonist named Elisa who flies upward, through the trees toward her house. Ahtila explains further, “With the flying scene and the sounds of the forest, I aimed at telling how she kind of lost gravity of things: a certain anchored meaning of things.” She did not want to depict this scene and more so, this disorder as something scary but rather as another state of being. Later, the video continues with scenes at her house. A significant portion of her work calls for a written script, being in the video installation realm. The process of writing for Ahtila is slow and long consisting of lighting ideas, sounds dialogues and so on. In the end, she puts these ideas together and creates a video piece.
