Christopher Ramirez reviews Barbara Kruger

Barbara Kruger is a conceptual artist and collagist from America, her work mostly consists of photographs, black and white, with captions laid on top of the photos. These phrases that are on these photographs are often addressing issues such as identity, power, ad sexuality. She started off as a graphic designer for magazines which helped influence her work which helps critique desire and consumerism. Because her work is in black and white it helps the phrases she lays on top stand out because they are in a bright red box with white letter. The phrases often in her works are power statements that make the viewer think about the meaning of the phrase as well as the picture itself as a whole. The phrases she uses both are deep and meaningful as well as mocking and sarcastic. Such as the one below, the phrase says “Money can buy you love”, mocking the common phrase “money can’t buy you love” she uses the phrase along with the photo to give it a sarcastic message and one we know isn’t true since people are so worked up over getting money and thinking money will be able to bring you happiness.

But then you have this image below, which reads “We don’t need another hero”, which is almost inspiring because it is a young child flexing to give the impression that they don’t need a hero when they can be their own hero.
