Sheridan O'Neal submits Julie Blackmon #7

Sheridan O'Neal submits Julie Blackmon #7

Julie Blackmon works as a photographer. In her latest work "Domestic Vacations", she attempts to understand the realms of art and life, how they are separate and how they overlap. She does this by taking everyday photographs of her family and her sister's family in real and imagined scenarios. I think she has found the balance between creating art about everyday life. Her photos do display a sense of whimsy and often appear to act as paintings. I think her compositions are well thought out and often have some sort of dead pan element similar to a Wes Anderson film still. They are very intriguing. They display fantasy and reality and how those realms interact. Blackmon claims that her work investigates "the stress, the chaos, and the need to simultaneously escape and connect". However, I do not see this tension in any of her photographs. Her photos do create tension but it compares distance and personal outlook. They do often show chaos but I never experience the other elements she claims such as stress, the need to escape, or need to find oneself in the midst of caring for your family. http://www.julieblackmon.com
