Blair Bodden submits Doug Dubois


Doug Dubois was born is Dearborn, Michigan in 1960. Dubois received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Dubois uses his family for his portraits. He began photographing his family back in 1984. During this period he documented the recovery of his father (he fell from a commuter train) and his mother’s breakdowns. His work is a inner look at family relationships. In most of his images the family member being exposed to the camera has a strained and uncertain demeanor about them. We always document our families with photographs whether we realize it or not, but we always document the happy, joyous, and proud moments. We do not document our family’s illness, stress, and our burdens. All of these things are what ties a family together. This is what caught my attention to his work especially since I am doing a piece on my mother and her disease. The above image is one Dubois took during his father’s recovery. His website is
