Irene Lozano submits Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman is a photographer who creates self portraits in different costumes. Her portraits tend to raise questions on the roles of women in society. I am most intrigued by her earlier work of untitled film stills. She began her film still series in 1977. In these black and white prints, Sherman impersonates various female character types from old movies and from the media. She explores how women and their bodies are represented in mass media. The reason why the prints are not titled in this series (only by number ex: Untitled Film Still # 65) is because she wants the viewer to be free in constructing their own narrative or questions about the woman she is portraying. Sherman is continuously imitating the representation of different women. Through the character of her poses, she is encouraging to see her as the main subject. I appreciate how in these film stills, the artist is in control of becoming the subject of someone’s stare.
